Work Accident
How was Mrs L affected by the injury?
Miss L was a 41-year-old play therapist from Huddersfield, West Yorkshire who whilst acting in the course of her employment, walked into the dining hall of the premises. It was after the school lunch and the room was empty. The dining hall floor had apparently been cleared and cleaned/ mopped after lunch. As she walked on the said floor, and just after she had entered the dining hall, her right foot slipped on the wet floor and she fell onto her left arm and elbow.
What happened on the day of the accident?
Miss L was immediately aware of pain and tingling in her left elbow. She attended Huddersfield Royal Infirmary Accident and Emergency Department where X-rays were taken that showed a fracture. Her left arm was immobilised in a back slab and arrangements were made for her to be admitted the following day for treatment of her injury.
How was Mrs L affected by these injuries?
She was admitted to hospital the day after the accident and the day after that she underwent open reduction and internal fixation of an olecranon fracture using a tension band wire. She was discharged home from hospital the day after the operation.
On discharge, her arm was immobilised in a back slab. She was reviewed in clinic where the backslab was changed for a removable cast a few weeks later. After the cast was removed, she had treatment with physiotherapy.
Miss L experienced severe pain at the time of the accident. She was aware of constant pain even at rest in the first few weeks following the accident. After this time she experienced intermittent pain that tended to occur with movement or activities. Her symptoms improved but as she continued to experience ongoing symptoms and as she was aware of a prominence of the metalwork under the skin, she underwent removal of the metalwork as a day case procedure under general anaesthesia in January 2018. She recovered from this operation over a period of two weeks. This helped to improve her symptoms and the majority of her symptoms have resolved.
