Injury Claim for Heywood Student involved in an accident at Post Office

Miss F was a 21-year-old lady from Heywood, Rochdale.

Miss F said that she was at a post office when her accident occurred. She was returning a parcel and was standing holding the parcel against a hatch, waiting for the post office worker to open the hatch. Suddenly, without any warning, the parcel hatch lifted open and trapped her left ring and middle fingers.

What happened on the day of the accident?

Miss F had immediate pain in these fingers, which were bleeding. She fainted shortly afterwards. As a result of her injuries, her mother took her to Rochdale Infirmary.

How was Miss F affected by these injuries?

Miss F says that she had a constant throbbing pain in her middle and ring fingers. The pain was exacerbated by knocking her fingers and was relieved by painkillers. The pain was most severe for the first two weeks before it began to improve. She says that it took approximately four weeks for the wounds to heal. During this time, she dressed the wounds herself.

She had difficulty sleeping due to pain and problems getting comfortable for the first week and a half. She suffered no nightmares or flashbacks. She says that since the accident she’s more anxious if she sees any blood and she’s worried that she may faint.

Miss F is currently a student at Salford University in the second year of a Quantity Surveying degree. At the time of the accident, she was at the end of her first year during the summer vacation. She, therefore, had no time off from university. She also worked part-time as a catering assistant, which she’d done since April 2018.

After the accident, she went on holiday for two weeks before returning to work. When she returned to work, she says that she was placed on light duties for the first couple of weeks, because of her injuries. She had to avoid any lifting or getting her hands wet.

She has 20 horses and enjoys riding most days and doing the livery. It was four weeks before she was able to return to doing this after the accident.

She went on holiday the day after the accident to Portugal. She feels that the injury spoilt her holiday as she was unable to do any swimming or usual activities she would have done on holiday, because of her injuries.

She couldn’t drive for the first three weeks after the accident.

She has been left with permanent scarring over her left ring finger.
